Biotechnology is technology that utilizes biological systems, living organisms or parts of this to develop or create different products. Brewing and baking bread are examples of processes that fall within the concept of biotechnology (use of yeast (= living organism) to produce the desired product).
Specifically, industrial biotechnology uses enzymes and microorganisms to make bio-based products in sectors such as chemicals, food ingredients, detergents, paper, textiles and biofuels. Since that time, industrial biotechnology has produced enzymes for use in our daily lives and for the manufacturing sector.
The goal of biotechnology is to produce drugs by using living organisms such as bacterial cells, yeast, mammalian cells, etc., that are placed in culture to produce substances with pharmacological activity, such as monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of tumors.
